Drive Safety Tips

. The follow drive safety tips are provided as a public service from NBI.  They are sound advice and we would hope all compute users would follow them.

  1. ALWAYS BACK UP! Keep current copies of important data offsite.

  2. To avoid data loss and program corruption, always quit your programs before shutting down your computer.
  3. Never turn off peripheral devices while the computer is on or when the disk is active, as this may cause directory damage.

  4. Compressed data is more difficult to recover. If you use compressed data make extra backups

  5. Never reformat your drive without testing your backup.

  6. Do not move or jar a drive while it is operating.

  7. When transporting a drive Use a well padded container.

  8. When Shipping a drive use the original carton and packing materials if possible. If not possible use 3 inches of firm foam padding (like egg crate foam) on all sides as well as the top and bottom of the drive. DO NOT USE PEANUTS!!

  9. Never drop a drive!! you can seriously damage a drive from a fall from as little as one inch to hard surface.

  10. ALWAYS BACK UP! Keep current copies of important data offsite.(do you think this is important!)
